Mastopexy (Breast Lift)
Conveniently located to serve Austin, TX
A Breast Lift, also called a Mastopexy, is a surgery that lifts sagging breasts either with or without breast implants. Those who choose to undergo a breast lift are usually those who are noticing that gravity has taken over their breasts due to aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding or other factors that may cause your breasts to sag. This procedure will restore the breasts to their original perky position and size.
A breast lift raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess fat/skin and repositioning the remaining tissue and nipples to improve its appearance. A breast lift can also reduce the size of the areola, which is the darker skin surrounding the nipple. If a patient’s breasts are small or have lost volume it can be added.
Breast Lift With or Without Implants: When deciding if an implant is necessary, the doctor will examine how much breast tissue you have and what you would like your desired result to be. A breast implant not only increase the size but also the firmness of the breast.
PREPARING FOR MASTOPEXY
A breast lift is major surgery, and before you undergo it, you will need to prepare by taking certain steps.
- Consultation: The preparation for breast lift surgery starts with your consultation with Dr. Fred Wilder. During this consultation, Dr. Wilder will assess your complete medical history. Maintain complete honesty and transparency with Dr. Wilder. If he deems certain medications (aspirin, herbal supplements, anti-inflammatory drugs, etc.) to be risky for the mastopexy procedure, you may be asked to temporarily stop taking them.
- Lifestyle Changes: If you are a smoker you will need to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to your mastopexy surgery. Regular heavy drinking should also be curtailed. Smoking and drinking trigger inflammation that can interfere with your recovery from the surgery.
- Arrange for Help: In the first three weeks following the surgery you will have to restrict yourself from engaging in heavy lifting and other strenuous activities. If you’re in charge of household chores or you have small children, this can pose a significant problem. To prepare for this, you must arrange for domestic help during your recovery
THE MASTOPEXY RECOVERY PROCESS
During the recovery period following your breast lift, you will need to strictly follow instructions provided by Dr. Wilder. This will ensure a shorter and more comfortable recovery process with a minimized chance of complications.
You will need to wear a support bra for a time following the surgery. You will be placed in a slightly supportive bra while still in the surgery center, but Dr. Wilder will determine what type of bra he wants you to wear at your first postoperative visit. Certain minor side effects like bruising, redness, pain, and swelling are common but only temporary. Dr. Wilder will prescribe the appropriate pain medication, and ice packs can help to reduce pain and swelling.
